The Return of Inspiration
Update: In the initial rush to get these published I didn’t realise that quite a few of them are of the same lightning strike but from each of the two cameras I was using at the time. The reason I didn’t really pick that up is because obviously over time the time keeping in the two different cameras has slowly drifted apart by about 5 minutes, and because there was heaps of shots with no lightning in those 5 minutes, the corresponding images didn’t even show up on the same view in LR. For example, the really huge strike that appeared to hit the fire was at 19:02:23 on the 50D and at 19:06:43 on the 60D. I have updated the descriptions to reflect this, and I’ve reset the times so it shouldn’t happen again. Sorry for not noticing it sooner.
After a long hiatus, I return to this site with some awesome lightning photos from a small storm that passed south of Clermont earlier this evening.
Very faint rainbow that only lasted for a couple of frames. I love the way it seems to be pointing to the transmission tower.
Even before I started getting lightning, it was a very pretty storm.
And then there was lightning.
Although I loved the way the colours changed as it got darker.
Although in a lot of the earlier shots the lightning itself was hidden within the rain.
And quite faint due to having the aperture stopped down because it was still daylight.
This shot was a “not-quite-right” shot whilst I was setting up the 50D, but it looks kinda dramatic.
Getting some better lightning shots now.
This one is the same strike as previous, but on the other camera.
Although there was still quite a few happening within the rain band.
This shot of the same strike as the previous one, but further zoomed in (24mm I think), shows what I mean.
This one seems to be coming from the tops of the cell.
This particular storm was starting to taper off by this point, but it still through out a couple of nice strikes.
So I turned the 60D towards another storm that was further south, and hoped for lightning to frame the electrical transmission tower in the foreground.
Kinda like this.
After that all of the storms in the area started to die off, and I had filled the 50D memory card, so I headed home. All in all, I think that was a successful evening.
And to make things even better, I’m started to feel inspired again. And all it took was a small lightning storm.
